Choosing day trips from Kyoto to Nara

Day trips from Kyoto to Nara work in two different ways: a guided combination joins Nara with Kyoto sights, while an independent train journey leaves the Nara part of the day in your hands. The combinations here each take nine hours. Compare the amount of travelling you want with the freedom to stay at one place, and choose a Kyoto departure rather than the Osaka option when your day starts in Kyoto.

Keep the departure address and return destination together in your plans. A product that sells both Osaka and Kyoto starts may have different arrangements for each option. Use the Kyoto transport guide for reaching your meeting point. For a day spent entirely within the city, the Kyoto itinerary gives a different set of choices.

Bus combinations with English and Chinese guidance

The Nara and Arashiyama bus combination includes an English- and Chinese-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, taxes, parking, fuel and handling charges. Its programme gives a Kyoto start at 09:00, alongside a separate Osaka start. Food, drinks and additional personal expenses are extra. The return may be Kyoto or Osaka according to the option, so make that choice part of the route decision rather than an afterthought.

The other guided Nara combination also lasts nine hours. It includes a bilingual English- and Chinese-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and round-trip transfers to the meeting location, with taxes, parking, tolls, fuel and environmental fees. Meals, drinks and other personal expenses are excluded. Its Kyoto and Osaka meeting points belong to different booking options. A return transfer to a meeting location should be planned as exactly that when choosing how to reach your accommodation afterwards.

A nine-hour combination starting at Kyoto Station

The alternative Kyoto and Nara outing includes a guide and an air-conditioned vehicle. Its Kyoto meeting instructions identify the Hachijo Entrance Square Sunken Garden and the JR Tokai Hachijo East Exit. A separate Osaka meeting point also appears, so retain the instructions for the Kyoto option you select. Decide on food, admission and other spending from the particular booking conditions rather than borrowing the inclusions of another bus trip.

These combinations suit travellers who want the guided day to handle movement between Nara and Kyoto stops. An independent train day is more suitable if you want your Nara visit to determine the schedule. Neither choice needs to become a race through every possible stop. Leave your evening flexible and compare other Kyoto tours on a different day if you want more time within the city.

Nara as the destination

Nara is the excursion destination rather than another district of Kyoto. Decide whether your main interest is the park, a temple visit or a broader introduction, then choose the transport that supports it. Our sister guide Nara covers the city itself; keep this page as a comparison of ways to travel from Kyoto.

Nara Park and the deer

The deer are wild animals. Give only shika-senbei rather than bread, vegetables or sweets, supervise small children during feeding and protect bags and paper. Males can be particularly aggressive in autumn. A photograph with a deer is not a reason to treat it as a pet. For the destination overview, see Nara Park.

Todai-ji within an excursion

A visit to the Great Buddha Hall is a distinct stop that needs room in the day and its own admission arrangements. Choose a tour or independent route with your intended visits in mind, rather than assuming every Nara combination includes the same buildings. The sister guide Todai-ji provides the temple overview.

JR and Kintetsu for an independent day

The Nara tourism access guidance gives roughly 45 minutes for the JR Miyakoji Rapid and roughly 35 minutes for the Kintetsu Limited Express, with a supplement for the latter. These are train journey indications, not the total time from a Kyoto hotel to a Nara attraction. JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara are different stations. Include reaching the station, waiting and the onward part of your route when deciding your departure.

The Kintetsu Rail Pass 1day applies to defined Kintetsu and Nara Kotsu areas on the selected day, with an additional ticket needed for Limited Express services. Compare the coverage with your actual journey before choosing it. ICOCA works by deducting fares from stored credit where accepted, which calls for a different calculation from an unlimited travel product.

Questions about Nara excursions

Do the tours depart from Kyoto?

Kyoto departures are available among the combinations here. Select that option and retain its meeting and return instructions, since Osaka departures are also sold.

Which train should I choose?

Compare JR Miyakoji Rapid with Kintetsu Limited Express according to your arrival station and route. The Limited Express requires a supplement; the journey times are approximate.

Are meals included on the bilingual bus trips?

Food and drinks are excluded from both nine-hour English- and Chinese-guided bus combinations. Set aside your own meal budget and use the arrangements of your selected trip.
