Kyoto bus journeys without mixing ticket types
A Kyoto bus journey can be a regular local ride, a Tourist-Express service or part of a guided sightseeing tour. Start with the destination and route, then choose the payment method. A bus-shaped vehicle does not mean the same fare or ticket applies. In particular, a sightseeing coach booking buys the stated excursion rather than access to the city transport network.
Group the places you want to visit before choosing a pass. The itinerary guide helps keep the day coherent, and the sightseeing overview helps narrow the destinations. For the journey into Kyoto from an airport, use the separate arrival guide instead of applying local bus prices to an airport service.

Regular buses and Tourist-Express services
The city bus guide consulted on 3 November 2026 listed regular flat-zone fares of 230 JPY for adults and 120 JPY for children. The Tourist-Express fare was 500 JPY for adults and 250 JPY for children. Check the service and fare zone rather than treating the lower flat-zone amount as a citywide price for every bus.
On Tourist-Express services, board at the front and pay when boarding. Other city routes generally use rear-door boarding, front-door exit and payment on leaving. The guide accepts transport IC cards and cash, with credit and debit cards not accepted as direct bus payment. Have the chosen means of payment ready before reaching the driver.
The city autumn 2026 information describes Tourist-Express services on weekends and national days off. EX100 connects Kyoto Station with Gojozaka, Gion, Okazaki and Ginkakuji-mae; Kiyomizumichi is served only towards Kyoto Station. EX101 connects Kyoto Station and Gojozaka. Choose the direction as carefully as the route number.

A guided coach day from Kyoto
The Kyoto departure combines an air-conditioned sightseeing bus, guiding and the stated temple admissions; lunch depends on the selected option.
ICOCA or a Subway & Bus One-Day Pass?
ICOCA is a rechargeable payment card. Each accepted journey draws from its balance, so holding it is different from having unlimited travel. The JR West example consulted on 3 November 2026 showed a 2,000 JPY purchase comprising 1,500 JPY of usable balance and a 500 JPY deposit. Look for the relevant acceptance mark when using it for transport or purchases.
The Kyoto Subway & Bus One-Day Pass was listed at 1,100 JPY for adults and 550 JPY for children at research on 3 November 2026. It covers the city subway, City Bus and specified additional bus networks, with exclusions. Tourist-Express accepts it. Match each intended journey to the coverage map before comparing it with separate fares; a Kyoto day pass should not be treated as permission to use every railway.
Choose by the routes you will actually take, rather than buying a pass because the day includes several attractions. An ICOCA balance, a day pass and a booked excursion solve different parts of the trip. Keep the airport ticket and any onward railway ticket distinct in your plan.
Guided bus tour or public line?
The guided coach option offered here has a Kyoto meeting at the Hachijo Exit tourist bus parking area in front of Kyoto AVANTI. Its listed meeting time is 09:05 and departure is 09:15. Select the Kyoto departure rather than the separate Osaka option. The listed duration is 600 minutes, so give it the day rather than combining it with a tight independent afternoon booking.
It includes an air-conditioned bus with free Wi-Fi, a multilingual guide with real-time audio translation, and admission tickets to Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. Lunch is included only with the relevant option. This is a way to hand over transport organisation for a sightseeing day; compare other formats on the tours page if you prefer walking or a different schedule.
November 2026 diversions and crowd planning
The city notice dated 23 October 2026 announces weekday changes from 2 to 27 November 2026 from the 10:00 hour through the 16:00 hour in Arashiyama. They affect route 11 towards Sanjo Keihan and route 28 towards Kyoto Station, with some southbound stops, including Arashiyama Tenryu-ji-mae, omitted. These diversions end on 27 November 2026.
A separate notice dated 15 October 2026 sets road measures in Arashiyama and Higashiyama on 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 November, with a weekday Arashiyama component from 16 to 27 November. The overall measures end on 29 November 2026. For a journey within those periods, look up the dated route and stop notices before leaving. Leave space between activities, keep boarding areas clear and avoid treating an early start as a promise of an empty vehicle.
Questions before you travel
Does ICOCA provide unlimited Kyoto travel?
ICOCA pays accepted fares from stored balance. Choose a day pass separately if its defined coverage suits the planned journeys.
Can the Subway & Bus One-Day Pass be used on Tourist-Express?
The city information accepts it on Tourist-Express. Check the coverage and exclusions for the other routes in your day.
Does the sightseeing coach replace local bus tickets?
The coach is a booked excursion with its own Kyoto meeting point and stated inclusions. Plan any separate city journeys with their own fare or pass.
